MBOGORA Healthcare Center
CONTEXT OF THE PROJECT
Medical flash card of the Mbogora Health Center
The health center is located in the center of Mbogora, in the town of Nyabihange, province of Mwaro in central Burundi. It is 84km away from the capital Bujumbura en 28km away from Gitega, the country’s second city.
Around the center we find the parish of Mbogora with the monastic community of nuns who manage the center. There are also several primary schools, a secondary school, a negotiation space, a small market, the office of the regional chief official, the security services, a social community house,...
The patients who visit the center mostly originate from 9 hills: Mbogora, Muhaganya, Nyarubayi, Migera, Muyange, Kivomya, Butegeyi, Gihoma and Kavumu. Some also come from the 8 primary schools in the region and the Mbogora Lyceum, which has over 900 students.
The Mbogora medical flash card mentions a population of 19 295 (in January 2011).
The reason for this project
The center is one of the 3 health centers in the town of Nyabihanga.
Over 98% of Mbogora’s 19 295 inhabitants are farmers.
The most common illnesses in the region are: malaria, pneumonia, diarrhoea, AIDS, worms,...

The center also has an acute shortage of equipment.
The center started its activities in the sixties (= 43 yrs of service to the population). Today, the equipment is outdated, worn out or simply lacking. Often only a minimal service can be offered, due to the absence of medicine and proper equipment.
The Mbogora center is a victim of the war which has plague Burundi for more than 10 years. As a consequence, its dearly needed equipment has been lost or destroyed.

Visit of the project 2012
Thursday 29.12.2011: the day before, we arrived late and already we are on the road to Mbogora. Désiré, our contact, is well on time and the starting signal is given. What a receipt once again by all those responsible on the spot. The project ' breeding of cows ' runs smoothly. The cows are housed in different families and the first calf should be returned to the project in order to pass again in another family. At the ' Centre de Santé ' we handed over some material. It concerns perfusion pumps and medical equipment, all this we received as a gift. There is clearly a great need for such material. So much joy when seeing these packets. In the future further help here is certainly necessary.
